The Original Roslin Castle – the ‘Castle of the Maidens.’ In Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was once known as the ‘Castle of the Maidens’ (11th century.) However according to a variety of sources, the original Roslin Castle, located at a different location from the present Castle (above), was also identified as, the ‘Castle of the Maidens.' Oliver and Boyd’s Scottish Tourist (1852), states: ‘The first castle of Roslin was called the Maidens' Castle, some vestiges of the foundation of which can be traced within a bend of the Esk at a short distance. The ‘Castle of the Maidens’ was a mythological location used extensively by the writers of European Arthurian and Grail Legends throughout the Middle Ages...
