Medieval Veneration of St. Mary Magdalene in Scotland. At various locations throughout Scotland there were medieval chapels dedicated to the veneration of St. Mary Magdalene. In the centre of Edinburgh, the Magdalene Tower (1541) was built on the site of an earlier church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene (see below.) Also in Edinburgh, ‘Magdalene Bridge’ and ‘Magdalene Burn’ derive their names from an earlier medieval chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, which was located 200 yards east of the mouth of the burn in an area known as ‘Magdalen’ or ‘Maitland Water.’ Chapels dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene were also located in St. Andrews, and close to Linlithgow Palace (see below…)
